The Department of Mathematics & Statistics
Mission & Vision

Department of Mathematics and Statistics Mission Statement

The main mission of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to offer high quality instruction in mathematics, statistics and the actuarial sciences to all students that it serves. The department strives to teach the main ideas and methods of mathematics and to build up the students reasoning and analytical skills. The department maintains programs and teaching practices that match those at most undergraduate programs at US universities. As the department offers courses in support of other degree programs, our mission is to make sure that these courses are taught at a high standard and meet the needs of those programs. For its majors, the department mission is to provide students with a number of degree programs and a wide spectrum of courses, and to offer them a rigorous training that enables them to pursue graduate degrees or work in jobs that require a high degree of mathematical skills.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics Vision Statement

The mathematical sciences are playing an important and ever increasing role in a number of new emerging fields and specializations such as in mathematical economics and finance and bioinformatics. The goal of the department is to develop and offer dynamic programs in the mathematical sciences that will prepare students to enter those new fields of specializations. Even though our program has been revised recently to make both the BS and the MS programs in mathematics multi-track degrees, our main goal is that we would like to be able to offer more diverse and flexible tracks and/or double majors that will make our students highly competitive in the job market. We hope to be able to expand our faculty to have specialists in those fields that can help us reach our goal.

We also recognize the role of doing research in the development of faculty members and students. We are increasing our activity in scholarly work and research and encouraging research by faculty members and by senior and MS students. To strengthen our scholarly activities, we envision that we will be able to plan and hold conferences, workshops and seminars on a regular basis. Moreover, we hope to acquire more sophisticated computers and expand our class-space and labs.

B.S. in Mathematics Degree Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Notre Dame University program for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is to provide high quality instruction to students, to expose them to a significant range of mathematical disciplines and to build up their reasoning and analytical skills in order to enable them:

  1. To pursue teaching at the high school level.
  2.  To secure employment in positions that require analytical ability.
  3.  To pursue graduate study in Mathematics or related fields.

B.S. in Actuarial Science Degree Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Bachelors of Actuarial Science program at Notre Dame University is

  1. To produce graduates who can contribute significantly to the financial security of individuals and corporations through proper training on how to identify, quantify, assess and manage risk.
  2. To provide students with a curriculum aligned in content and rigor with the learning outcomes of the Society of Actuaries. Such program prepares our graduates to successfully write at least three of the preliminary exams of the SOA, leading towards professional designations from international actuarial societies.
  3. To provide students with technical and practical backgrounds qualifying them to pursue graduate level education in Actuarial Science or related fields.

M.S. in Mathematics Degree Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Notre Dame University program for a Master of Science in Mathematics is to provide high quality instruction to students, to expose them to a significant range of advanced mathematical disciplines and to build up their reasoning and analytical skills in order to enable them to:

  1. pursue teaching at the high school or college level.
  2. secure employment in positions which require analytical ability.
  3. achieve the experience necessary to do research in Mathematics
  4. pursue Ph.D. programs in Mathematics or related fields.

M.S. in Financial Mathematics Degree Program Mission Statement

A Master of Science degree in Financial Mathematics

  1. prepares students to work effectively in a wide spectrum of financial service industries such as investment firms, commercial banks, brokerage houses, consulting firms, and other related corporations.
  2. helps students to synthesize a highly technical branch of Mathematics and measure theoretic probability with practical applications that affect everybody’s life.
  3. emphasizes problem-solving skills that dramatically increase the graduate value to an employer.
  4.  prepares students to pursue Ph.D. programs in Financial Mathematics or related fields.
